Buffalo Niagara Airport (BUF)
Airport Information
(Buffalo, New York - NY, USA)
Next to Bowmansville, Cheektowaga and Williamsville, Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF) lies around 9 miles / 14 km to the east of the northern frontier town of Buffalo and is a gateway to western New York State, Niagara Falls and southwest Ontario, Canada. Established around 70 years ago, Buffalo Niagara Airport replaced an earlier airport, which was established on a substantial plot of Cheektowaga farmland as long ago as 1925.
Each year, Buffalo Airport serves five million people, with more than 100 daily flights to around 20 domestic and international destinations. The facility covers around 1,000 acres / 405 hectares and has become known for its elegant terminal, which boasts a spectacular lobby with arching walls and actually resembles an enormous aircraft, poised and ready for take-off.

There are several options for getting to downtown Buffalo and Niagara Falls from the airport, including taxis operated by the Independent Taxicab Association (ITA). The Metro Link Shuttle is perhaps the most efficient and best value for money transfer option, while public buses run to the city and around, linking downtown Buffalo, the Allentown area and the popular Theater District. Shuttle services also run all over the city hourly, as do taxis and limousines, linking nearby Port Colborne and the cities of Rochester, off the I-90 interstate.
Buffalo Niagara Airport (BUF) Information: History and Facilities
Originally known as the Greater Buffalo International Airport, the city's airport of today dates back as far as the late thirties, opening in the spring on 1939. However, the grounds soon appeared rather out of scale when compared to the increasing size of modern aircraft and in the fifties, a major renovation plan helped to rectify this problem.
However, by the seventies, further growth meant that it was necessary to build a further passenger building and in 1971, the new 'West Terminal' opened, only to be extended just five years later. By the 1990s, it was decided to build a third, ultra-modern terminal, which was completed in 1997 after expenditure of around £56 million, replacing the existing East and West buildings. These were demolished soon after.
There is one terminal at the airport and this building comes complete with cash machines located on both levels, a bureau de change booth at the Business Center, and both postal and lost property services. Buffalo Niagara Airport also features several shops and eateries throughout the terminal, such as Jake's Bistro, the Niagara Grill, the Freshens coffee shop, the Landmark Bar and Wings to Go.
Additional facilities at Buffalo airport include a full service hair salon, a shoeshine service, and office-style workstations, with desks, chairs and dataports. Also onsite is an appealing art gallery, showcasing ever-changing pieces from the Western New York Region.
